Tanjung Sepat Day Trip

Bukit Jalil Park

 

 

My family from Sabah was here during the start of this school holidays.  We went for a day trip to Tanjung Sepat in two cars on a Sunday morning.  Our first stop was for a "round the world tour" before heading for breakfast. Hehehe... 

 

 

We had our breakfast at Wing Hiong BKT in Sri Petaling.  I bought the discount vouchers online and the food came in sets.  The bowls of intestines were ordered separately.  Business was slow and we occupied two tables and that was it throughout our stay there. 

 

 

 

FGS Dong Zen Temple, Jenjarom

 

 

I have heard so much about this temple in Jenjarom.  We didn't make it there on our way back from Gold Coast Morib Resort during the last school holidays as we missed a turning.  The place was serene and peaceful.

 

 

We then stopover at Hai Yew Heng to buy some buns but decided otherwise after seeing flies, I mean swarm of flies hovering around the dough and unsteamed buns! Yucks!

 

 

Lover's Bridge, Tanjung Sepat

 

When we reached our destination, I quickly led my dad to the other end of the bridge famously known as Lover's Bridge while the hubs went to secure a table for lunch at Ocean Seafood Restaurant located just beside the bridge.  To our disappointment, there was no scene of fishermen sorting out fishes on board the fishing boat to which I so eagerly showed my dad in the hope to bring back some nostalgic memories.  My dad was a hard working fisherman and had spent most of his life in the ocean to give his family of  six a decent living. Thanks papa!

 

It was so hot now that the sun was on top of our head.  I quickly snapped a photo of dad with a docked boat as the background and walked back to the restaurant.  While at the restaurant waiting for food to be served, I asked the rest of them why they did not join us and my sister showed me this photo..

 

 

Ahahaha..  I had been to the other end of the bridge twice and never realized such a sign existed. :P

We had our lunch at Ocean seafood Restaurant.  The restaurant is always packed and the food was yummy but it took quite long to arrive. The bill came to RM200+ which was paid by my big brother.

Tanjung Sepat is known for their dragon fruit and passion fruit farms.  Big brother and the hubs got us some of those chilled juices in bottles and they were so refreshing to drink on a hot sunny day!

 

We made a quick tour to a dragon fruit farm before sending big brother and sister in-law to the airport to catch a flight back to Sabah.  We had a tiring but fun family day out and I wish we could do that more often.

 

 

 

 

 

 



Science Festival 2012 @Pusat Sains Negara (Part 2)

We visited PSN again on the last day of the week long Science Festival for their outdoor activities before they wrapped up the event. We got hands-on experience on how to make magic bubbles and I meant gigantic magic bubbles!

 

Next, we went on for the flying fox activity.  The mommy chickened out but the boy was so excited to play for the very first time!  I am already planning to take him to Extreme Park in Shah Alam during the next school holidays.

It was his first time doing wall climbing too and it took him great effort to get to the top.  Bravo Boy!

We had some ice-cream and drinks before going back indoor.  My boy played moon walking for the 2nd time and had few rounds of ball shooting at the indoor playland before we called it a day.  Both the mother and son had so much fun!

 

 

 

Science Festival 2012 @Pusat Sains Negara (Part 1)

We went for a visit to National Science Centre located in Bukit Kiara, KL recently.  This is an event that we'll never want to miss every year end.  Admission was free in conjunction with Science Festival held during that period. 

 

 

 

Walk-in Lab: Demonstration of plant photosynthesis & respiration 

 

BTB (Brom thymol blue) solution is used as an indicator for the presence of carbon dioxide in this demo. Blow lots of carbon dioxide with the straw into the solution and it turns green, blow more co2 and it turns light yellow.  Put in some algae (plant) into the liquid and expose the container in sunlight.  As photosynthesis (water+sunlight+carbon dioxide+chloroplast(plant)) takes place, the carbon dioxide will be used up, making the solution turn towards blue.

 

 

 

It was a weekday when we were there. We first approached the Nature Secrets Lab and we were the only one there. The staff was so friendly that we were shown the emergence of pupae to larva before they transform into butterflies or moths.

There was an Ayamas stall but their menu was somewhat limited and we didn't realize there was a swimming pool there after so many visits!

 

We spent almost 4 hours there before we left for our late lunch but still there were lots left unexplored.   I promised the boy for another visit before the science festival ended, this time he got to play flying fox, wall climbing and paint ball shooting for the very first time and and many many more! Perpustakaan Raja Tun Uda Shah Alam

I braved myself and ventured out from my comfort zone again, this time to Perpustakaan Raja Tun Uda in Shah Alam.  I saw some photos posted by one of my FB friends and was impressed with the amount and choices of books available, they have Chinese, English and BM book titles and not forgetting that membership are totally free and no annual fees.   Unlike the two public libraries we used to frequent, TTDI Public Library and Puchong Library where they still impose annual membership fees and I can't find any Chinese titles there.

Tues - Fris: 9.30am - 7pm

Sats & Suns: 9.30am - 9pm except for Creative Zone (Kids' Section)

where they open until 7pm only

 

Children section where kids can read on a "hill" under a gigantic "reading tree".

 

As the place is fully carpeted, no shoes are allowed.  You have to remove your shoes, put them into a bag provided to you and carry it with you.

 

The place is colourfully furnished.  It is well equipped with fairly new Apple iMac desktop computers!  Kids and parents can go online at an affordable charge of RM1 per hour.

Self registration of membership is done online (there are few terminals there for you to do so) and it will be activated within an hour.  No membership card are issued to adults as Mykad will serve as one but children will be issued a member card on their next visit there.

 

We only managed to explore the Children section on our first visit there.  The next visit will be for myself to explore the Adult section.  6D movies are even available at a fee but the boy wasn't interested at all regardless of the number of Ds so we gave that one a pass.  I heard they have a gym room too and that one will be on my next to visit list too.

 

If you stay around Puchong, Subang and Shah Alam areas, this is the type of library that you would like to visit.

Erupting Volcanoes: Home Science Project #1

 

We got this book for RM22 from Big Book Shop Sale recently.  A good book for science projects at home I would say.  My boy chose Erupting Volcanoes to kick-start the book. 

 

 

 

You will need:

 

Jug

Baking Soda (we use baking powder)

Flour (we use corn flour)

Stirring Rod

Funnel

(we cut a small bottle into half, turn the upper part upside down as funnel)

Plastic Bottle

Sand (we use soil)

Tray

Large plastic tray

Vinegar

Red food colouring

(we make do with none, hence the white frothing bubbles)

 

Step 1:

Pour some baking soda and flour into the jug and mix thoroughly.

 

Step 2:

Pour the mixture of baking soda and flour into the plastic bottle.

 

Step 3:

Put sand into the large plastic tray and add in water to make the sand sticky but not too wet.

Mix well.

 

Step 4:

Stand the plastic bottle containing the baking soda and flour mixture in the centre of a tray.

Start packing the wet sand around it. Make the sand into a cone shape.

 

Step 5:

Pour vinegar into the jug and add enough food colouring to make the vinegar

a rich red colour. (We don't have red colouring, so just make do with none).

 

Step 6:

Now, pour the red-coloured vinegar into the plastic bottle through the funnel.

Remove the funnel from the bottle and observe.

The vinegar and baking soda mix to give off carbon dioxide.  This makes the flour turn frothy and forces it out of the bottle as lava.

 

Try it, it's fun!  My boy was so in awe and thrilled to have witnessed the whole process of a volcano erupting! :)

Claypot BKT in soup (single portion) ~ As you can see, not many meat and "liu"

 

I bought the food vouchers from an online discount company a while ago and thought of using them when my parents, sister, brother and wife, nephews and my niece were in town two weeks ago.  We had too many activities apparently during their short stay here that the vouchers were left unused. 

 

I decided to go there for lunch with my boy today and here's what we got for the set meal.  Two glasses of chinese tea (no pic) are included in the meal too.

 

Dried Bak Kut Teh (single portion) ~ very small portion

 

2 bowls of deep fried dough sticks

 

2 plates of rice

 

Taste wise, just so-so only and the portion was just enough to feed a big eater and a small eater.  No prize for guessing right who is who though. :)  Not complaining though as I only paid RM12 for a BKT lunch for 2 pax. :)
